From the sleeve notes by Alec Palao:

This compilation is drawn from the seven albums Country Joe McDonald has cut for Rag Baby, the imprint on which his earliest musical forays with Country Joe & the Fish appeared in the mid-1960s, and which was resurrected in 1980 by McDonald and Bill Belmont. After the dissolution of the Fish at the beginning of the 1970s, McDonald had recorded a string of albums for Vanguard and Fantasy, with varying degrees of critical and commercial success. Forever tagged as the rancorous politico of "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die," Woodstock and the F-U-C-K Fish cheer fame in the US, McDonald preferred to spend time in Europe and the rest of the world, where he was at least appreciated as much for his music as his message. The situation was no different when, by the end of the decade, his contract with Fantasy expired, so Joe began releasing records on Rag Baby that sold respectably enough on the continent for him to spend the best part of the l980s touring Germany. These varied from acoustic outings like On My Own to the rock-orientated Peace On Earth and Vietnam Experience, from the experimental humour of Child's Play to the rootsy basics of Superstitious Blues and Carry On. There was even an archival release, Collector's Items; The First Three EPs. But throughout the Rag Baby canon, no matter how far he strays from the public stereotype/straight jacket of Country Joe the radical, McDonald maintains his integrity, his compassion and his craft.
