Country Joe's Place

No World Record for F***?!?

From Scott Ostler's column in the San Francisco Chronicle, July 27:

Country Joe McDonald, the Berkeley music legend who rocked the original Woodstock with his "Vietnam Rag" ("Whoopie, we're all going to die!"), got bad news yesterday.

The Guinness Book of World Records rejected Country Joe's formal bid to be recognized as the person who has made the most people yell the F-word in public. Country Joe and the Fish used to open their act with a spell-out, Joe saying, "Gimme a big F," and so on, then, "what's that spell?"

He led half a million people in screaming the word at Woodstock. It had to do with Vietnam, kids, and you had to be there, but many found the spell-out daring and inspiring.

Alas, Guinness says its officials have no way of knowing if anyone may have topped Joe.

He says he's not giving up on his quest, and you have to admire his ... Gimme a big P ... L ... U... C ... K.
